Short answer: PPF tells you how much photosynthetic light a fixture produces in total. PPFD tells you how much of that light reaches a specific area. Use PPF to compare fixture output, then use PPFD measurements or a manufacturer’s light map to understand what the plants receive at a chosen height.
What PPF means
PPF, or photosynthetic photon flux, is a fixture-level output measure. It describes the total photosynthetic light produced over a period of time, usually expressed in micromoles per second. It is useful for comparing the relative output of fixtures before you consider installation height and coverage.
The Nanolux RG150 product information lists up to 380 µmol/s PPF. The RG Series information lists up to 800 µmol/s PPF for RG300 and up to 1,300 µmol/s PPF for RG480.

What PPFD means
PPFD, or photosynthetic photon flux density, describes the photosynthetic light reaching a defined surface area. It changes with mounting height, the position on the growing surface, the fixture’s beam distribution and the way reflective or surrounding surfaces affect the setup.
That is why a fixture’s total PPF does not by itself tell you the exact light level at every leaf. A light map, meter reading or carefully documented setup is needed when you want position-specific information.
How to use the two metrics together
- Start with the growing area and the amount of space you need to light.
- Use PPF as a first comparison of total fixture output.
- Check the manufacturer’s coverage wording or light map for the chosen installation.
- Remember that PPFD varies across the canopy and with mounting height.
- Adjust height or dimming gradually instead of treating one number as a universal setting.

Is higher PPF always better?
